Last week it was unfortunately time for our group of students to split up, with 10 students flying back to Japan and the other 19 heading to language schools and host families around the country. However, to mark this occasion students and staff gathered at Antico Restaurant in Durham for a farewell lunch.
During the meal we were treated to excellent food and wine, with students particularly enjoying the steak main course and tiramisu dessert. It was a lovely atmosphere in which staff and students were able to chat and reflect on a busy but extremely rewarding semester.
Towards the end of the meal, both Principal Kosuge and Bursar spoke to the students, congratulating them on their hard work and on their successful integration into life at Durham. All students were presented with certificates confirming their competition of the course. Following this, seven students were recognised for their academic achievements, integration, and perseverance. The awards and winners in question were:
DU VC Award for Academic Performance - Mr Ken Ikeda – St. Mary’s
Sport Award - Mr Maruto Ohashi – Collingwood
Academic Improvement Award - Miss Yuika Tsumurai – Collingwood
Integration Award - Mr Issei Kamiyama – St. Mary’s
Contribution to TUID Award - Mr Hayato Kawakami – Collingwood
Positive Contribution Award - Mr Kohha Senuma – Van Mildert
Positive Contribution Award - Mr Yoshinobu Makiguchi – Van Mildert
It was difficult for the teachers to narrow the list down to only seven, as there were so many deserving students on this course. As well as individual awards, it was also time to announce the victorious college in the Teikyo College Championship. This term was an incredibly close contest, with two colleges ending up within only a few points of each other. However, St. Mary’s just pipped Collingwood to win their first ever edition! It was a well-deserved victory for St. Mary’s, and the students enjoyed raising the trophy aloft to celebrate months of hard work.
Finally, we would like to congratulate both our GCP and Main Course students on completing the term here at Teikyo University in Durham. We wish them a safe journey either to Japan or onto language school, and of course a very merry Christmas to all.
