Last week, eleven of our students along with two staff members spent four days in Barcelona. After a long but safe journey via Heathrow to Barcelona, we arrived late in the evening. Thursday began with a walking tour of Barcelona. Many photos were taken of the famous sights as we walked along Las Ramblas, past the local market and the old cathedral in the city centre. In the evening of the first day, we went to a wonderful flamenco dancing show where the students saw and heard traditional Spanish dance and music.
On the second and third day, the students were treated with seeing two of Gaudi’s most famous architectural works. On Thursday, we went to La Sagrada Familia, the still-under construction cathedral, amazingly designed and started by Gaudi in 1882. The anticipated completion date is 2026! On Friday morning, we went to Park Guell built in the early twentieth century and reflecting Gaudi’s style. The students were so impressed by these two sites that many also visited Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, two further Gaudi buildings during their free time.
On Sunday morning, all the students chose to visit the Camp Nou, Barcelona’s iconic football stadium. Here students learnt about the history of FC Barcelona, with many and various trophies on display. The tour also involved looking out at the pitch from the stands, visiting the dressing rooms and press-office and even walking down the players’ tunnel towards the pitch. Some students then decided to visit the Barcelona megastore and purchase the famous red and blue striped kit.
Also on the trip, we visited the Picasso Museum and had a short visit to the beach, though nobody went in for a swim! The trip also provided plenty of free time for the students to explore Barcelona for themselves. During this time, they enjoyed buying many souvenirs, tasting authentic Spanish food like paella and visiting other famous cultural sites. All students arrived back safely into Durham on Sunday evening having had an amazing experience of Barcelona and Spanish culture for the first time.
