The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity here at Teikyo University of Japan in Durham, as we welcomed students from three exciting short courses: the Alliance Programme, the Economics Career Challenge Programme (ECCP), and the Teikyo Short-term Abroad Programme (TSAP). As each group only had a limited amount of time in Durham, we packed in as much as possible, ensuring our students had a memorable experience of Durham, British culture, and student life in the UK.
The Alliance Programme (17th February – 4th March)
We began our short course season with the Alliance Programme, welcoming seven students from Teikyo, Kindai, and Tokai University. Over two weeks, students took part in a mix of English lessons, discussions on British culture and global topics, and a range of social activities that helped them immerse themselves in life at Durham.
Evenings were filled with opportunities to relax and socialise, including a cinema night, bowling, and a visit to a college bar. During these events students were joined by Durham University volunteers, providing a fantastic chance for students to interact with local students in a fun, informal setting.
At the weekends, the group set off to explore some of the UK’s most historic and vibrant cities. Helen accompanied the students to Edinburgh, guiding them through the iconic Royal Mile and up to Edinburgh Castle for breathtaking views. On the weekend Debra led a trip to York, where students wandered through its medieval streets, admired the stunning York Minster, and soaked in the city’s rich history. Some students took the opportunity to venture further afield, visiting Alnwick Castle, Newcastle, and even Manchester, where one student fulfilled a dream of watching a live football match.
Before departing the UK, the Alliance students made their way to London for a few days, led by Helen and Junko. Their time in the capital was packed with sightseeing, cultural visits, and the chance to experience the energy of one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
Economics Career Challenge Programme (5th – 15th March)
Shortly after the Alliance Programme ended, we welcomed 14 students from Teikyo University, accompanied by Professor Rieko Matsuoka, for this year’s ECCP. Over ten days, students engaged in Business and Academic English classes, focusing on economics, business culture, and professional communication skills.
Outside the classroom, students took part in evening activities, including a cinema night, bowling, and a visit to a college bar, once again joined by Durham University volunteers. These social events gave them the perfect opportunity to practice their English in a relaxed, engaging environment.
For their weekend excursion, Jacob led the group to Edinburgh, where they had the chance to explore Scotland’s capital, admire its impressive architecture, and soak up the lively atmosphere. A few students also made independent trips to Manchester, eager to experience the thrill of an English football match.
During their final week in Durham, students participated in Global Week, a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture featuring live music, lectures, and a captivating Rakugo performance by visitors from Japan. The event brought together Teikyo and Durham students, fostering meaningful connections and offering a memorable opportunity for cultural exchange. The lively atmosphere and engaging performances made it a standout moment of their time in Durham.
On their final evening in Durham, students and staff came together for a farewell meal, reflecting on their experiences and the friendships they had formed. The following morning, the group departed for London with Professor Matsuoka, where they continued their UK adventure before returning to Japan.
Teikyo Short-term Abroad Programme (18th – 21st March)
Our final short course of the season was the TSAP, and though it was only a few days long, we ensured that every moment was filled with learning, cultural exploration, and social activities.
During their stay, the students dined at St Mary’s College, getting a glimpse into Durham’s traditional collegiate dining experience. Evenings were spent enjoying a mix of board games, a movie night, and gaming on the PlayStation.
For their trip to Edinburgh, Michael took the group on an exciting journey to Scotland’s historic capital. They explored the city’s famous landmarks, walked through its vibrant streets, and enjoyed a final adventure before wrapping up their short but memorable stay in the UK.
Before we knew it, the TSAP students were heading back down to slough to continue their visit. Although their time in Durham was brief, we hope to see them return in the future to continue their international journey.
Looking Back on an Incredible Few Weeks
With three courses in just over a month, Teikyo in Durham has been busier than ever, but it has been an absolute joy to meet and work with so many enthusiastic students. Whether through academic study, cultural exploration, or social events, each group made the most of their time here, and we hope they left with great memories, new skills, and lasting friendships.
We look forward to welcoming more students in the future and can’t wait to see what 2026 will bring!
